At the beginning of this summer I picked up a copy of “The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need” by one of my favorite authors Dan Pink.
At the beginning of this summer I picked up a copy of “The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need” by one of my favorite authors Dan Pink. I had the opportunity to see Dan speak at the 2008 NAIS Annual Conference in New York in February and during his keynote, he referenced a new book he was working on that would be coming out in the spring, a career guide of sorts, done in the style of a manga. Sounded interesting. It was originally part of my “summer” reading list and even though the book takes no more than an hour to read, I didn’t get to it until last week.

What appeals to me the most about the message in “Johnny Bunko” is the potential it has to help young people re-examine their priorities. As someone who works with young people daily, the opportunity to engage the next generation of leaders, creators, inventors and creative thinkers is a profound responsibility that few in this world have and the lessons that Johnny learns throughout the book are valuable to students as they embark on their own journeys. More importantly, Dan makes it clear that the advice adults give young people about life doesn’t necessarily apply anymore. As he said during his keynote, there was a time when falling back on a career as an attorney or an accountant could be seen as safe career choices. People are always going to need a lawyer or account right? Wrong, in the age of 123divorceme.com and TurboTax the advice our parents gave us about accounting and law and the rules around careers in general have changed.

A brief synopsis. Johnny Bunko is a young man who did what everybody around him told him too. Unfortunately, the advice he received from his parents, teachers, mentors and counselors didn’t really serve him very well and now Johnny finds himself “stuck at a dead-end job, and he’s begun to suspect that what he thought he knew is just plain wrong.” When seemingly out of no where, Johnny meets Diana, the most un-traditional and odd career advisor you would ever meet. Diana reveals/shares six essential lessons for thriving and succeeding in the professional world and in turn, reshapes Johnny’s view about his place in life and the method he uses to make the important decisions about his career path. The lessons in the book are simple and while Pink does not make any direct references to it, the book feels like it has a zen flavor to it. From the sushi restaurant where Johnny gets the magic chopsticks, to the way Diana meditates, to this reader, the connections became evident as I read through the story.

There is no plan: No matter how hard you try and no matter what anyone tells you, there is no way to predefine or predetermine your path in life. It is impossible and impractical to map out your life. The world is in a constant state of change an if we try to anticipate that change we lose sight of the possibilities that the change itself can bring. Be present in the moment and recognize that each experience presents a unique opportunity, like the Dad who becomes a blogger.

Think strengths, not weaknesses: Capitalize on what you are good at and steer away from areas that present challenges for you. Here Diana gets very zen on Johnny by introducing the concept of “flow” by telling Johnny he should focus on activities that create flow in him. “Flow is the mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing, characterized by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity.” Like is said, very zen.

It’s not about you: Focus outward in your work and NOT inward. Work toward bringing the best out in others, remember that your work is not about you. Your energy and effort should go toward the greater good not shameless self promotion.

Persistence trumps talent: Compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe. According to Albert Einstein who makes a cameo in the book and helps Diana explain that the people who achieve the most are “often the ones who stick with it when others don’t.” Those of us in schools have most definitely found ourselves using this logic with students who are struggling or not achieving at a level they wish they were.

Make excellent mistakes: Every time you make a mistake, it serves as an opportunity to learn and do something better. This doesn’t mean simple, ordinary kind of mistakes, but big, aspirational kind of mistakes. I have personally found myself the benefactor of this advice. I would rather have tried to do something big, something significant and failed than not tried to do anything at all.

Leave an imprint: The final piece of advice seems to connect beautifully with my own mantra. Reshape the world, one creative idea at a time. Did you make a difference? Did you contribute to the greater good? I recall a conversation I had with a student early in my teaching career, he asked me why I would go into teaching when I could have done just about anything else. I told him I wanted to leave my thumbprint on his brain. Leave your thumbprint or as Diana suggests leave your imprint on this world.

“The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need” is simple, creative and provides a profound message for young people. It is a career guide that will not only serve those newly entering the work force but those who may find themselves, like Johnny a bit disillusioned by the advice they received back in the day. I recommend getting a copy.

I couldn’t help myself. After all the advertising and media hype yesterday afternoon rolled around and I just needed to get in the car after work and make my way to the Verizon store to check out the new Blackberry storm. Bear in mind that this long time Mac user and advocate has been without an iPhone since the initial launch and continues to find himself not carrying one. Part of the reason, as I am sure it is for others is that my company/school pays for my wireless phone service, and the corporate account is with Verizon.

With that, I made my way to the crowded Verizon store and cozied up to the BB Storm for some quality time. At first, I was impressed with the overall look and feel, the screen was bright and it felt new and shinny. But this initial flurry of positive reaction faded quickly. I spent over a minute trying to figure out how to unlock the screen and it might have been better if I had been unsuccessful because the experience that followed was disappointing.

The Storm’s “innovative” click screen is not what it’s being hyped up to be. The screen is not nearly as responsive as the iPhone or my iPod Touch. The clicking is only moderately amusing and in fact, becomes annoying after a while. RIM made a huge mistake in making the primary keyboard a two button keyboard and the only way to activate the full Qwerty keyboard is to turn the Storm over to its side. The two button keyboard is just a waste of time and was better left on the Pearl. Not sure what they were thinking.

I started tinkering around with applications, browser, mail, Flickr application etc. The responsiveness of the Storm is slow and sluggish. It lagged as I made my way from one application to the other and even hung up at one point on camera mode. The scrolling feature appeared to have a 1 second delay from the time you scrolled up or down and the time that the screen actually responded. The demo of the Application store was nothing more than a simple scrolling list and the few applications listed, Flickr, Facebook, Yahoo chat were not impressive. All in all, I spent close to 15 minutes giving the unit a real close inspection. I walked away disappointed and resolute in my suspicion that the iPhone is truly the best mobile computing platform on the market today.

Now some of you might say, yeah, we have been telling you that for a while now and believe me, I drove from the Verizon store over to the AT&T store to give the iPhone a similar test drive. There was no comparison. Since I own an iPod Touch it wasn’t necessary to give it a full once over, so I checked out the few functions missing from the iPod Touch; camera, SMS Text, Phone and visual voicemail. I even made a call home to my wife and work colleague. I was sold. Except for one thing. The salesperson at the AT&T store was awful, she barely knew what she was talking about, she openly claimed she had received no training from Apple and that contrary to the AT&T website, there was no 3G available in my home town. Needless to say, I did not feel compelled to give her the sales commission. Furthermore, once I drilled down on the numbers, the $89.99 plan which includes unlimited data, 900 minutes needed to have $5 added for 200 text messages a month as well as a slew of taxes, fees and other charges. The monthly charge was going to come to close to $110 a month.

Faced with taking on these charges in my personal budget versus keeping my Verizon Blackberry Curve 8330 I decided to hold off. Now here is the deal; my Curve feels like I am working on a PC. It gets the job done, it gives me my email, I can access my work calendar and check CNN or Slate. The social media applications I use the most, Flickr for Blackberry, Twitterberry and Facebook mobile work fine. They can in no way compare to their iPhone counterparts, but again, they get the job done. I am also not convinced that AT&T service/coverage is not what its being hyped up to be, but my iPhone friends could prove me wrong.

Bottom line, given the work I am doing, my use of social media and mobile technology, coupled with the fact that I have been a Mac guy since I was in 8th grade, it pains me daily not to have the iPhone and who knows, I might break down and do it. The applications I have downloaded on my iPod Touch are fantastic and really enjoyable to work with. Eventually, Verizon and Apple will find a way. Maybe as soon as Macworld in January 2009. But for now, I can do most of what I want/need to do in terms of work and social media with my Verizon BB Curve and sometimes, waiting so very patiently is very zen.

NOTE: This is a repost originally published on May 19th, 2008. At our school our first trimester just ended, grades and comments are almost done and most people are starting to feel a bit frazzled. I came across it again and thought it worth sharing. Enjoy-AV

In a departure from my regular Monday Morning Meditation pieces, I thought I would spend a few moments reflecting on how I think all of us, but particularly school leaders can focus on becoming more mindful in our work and daily lives. As the school year begins to race towards its graduation crescendo, the frenetic pace of life and work in schools often results in losing sight of what is really important. Below is a list of 5 techniques I use towards staying focused and balanced during what is normally a busy and stressful time in the life of a school.

Unplug and refocus: If you are anything like me, your email is open all day and the little red light that indicates you have a voice mail message never seems to disappear. I am fortunate that our school has a beautiful, large green quad that is flanked by benches that enjoy shade from mature trees. 10 minutes on the bench, watching students play frisbee or listening to the sounds of campus mid-day give both the mind and the body a chance to recharge and refocus.

Don’t skip lunch: I have experienced mindful eating practice while attending a retreat for educators at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies. The exercise involves eating in silence without speaking to anyone around you and using that time for mindful contemplation. Being fully present and aware of the moment. I often find my schedule dictating my ability to take 30 minutes to eat lunch. Make the time to allow yourself opportunities slow down and experience the moment of eating a healthy lunch or conversing with a colleague about something other than work.

Step away from your desk: It is often the case that if you are like me and your office door is open that you will experience several impromptu and informal visits from members of your school community. Rather than sitting behind your desk and falling to the temptation of looking at email or glancing at the work you were doing, step away and find a neutral spot to be fully present in the moment. Focus on the person’s question and allow for the exchange to be authentic.

Keep a journal: This blog serves as an opportunity for me to reflect and write about those things that are important to me. Keep track of your day by keeping a journal or notebook with you that allows you reflect and focus on stressful events, exchanges or conversations as they occur. The result is an archive of both the good and not so good experiences that make up the quality of your work experience.

Make time for yourself: Find the joy and pleasure in small activities that would otherwise seem burdensome. For me, spending time in my garden or outside with the dogs and my son allows for the endless to do list to seem a little less pressing and results in putting things into perspective. Go for a walk. Drive home in a different direction and take note of what you see. The pace of the day should not remove opportunities for oneself, but rather should be woven into it.

There is no question that the rest of the world will continue to forge ahead with adopting new technology and implementing new marketing and communication strategies well before those of us in the education world will. However, I have spent some time recently thinking and Twittering with friends and colleagues (@steveritchie @ernestkoe @alexragone @AdmissionsQuest ) about how the shift to “social technologies” is going to reshape the way schools work with students, communicate with parents and alumni and forward their mission. Social media technologies function to further the digital conversation and connect groups of people with one another in ways that traditional web based technologies cannot. So, if you or your school is thinking about how to update your approach to the web, your communication or marketing strategy or looking for new ways to engage teachers in the classroom, here is a humble list that I think is worth giving some thought.

Fostering conversation - Whether you use Twitter, set up a Facebook page or group for your school or alumni group, as many schools have, the focus is going to continue to shift away from providing information to fostering conversations. This can be best characterized by President Elect Obama’s decision to post his weekly radio address on YouTube and many have likened it to the old school “fireside” chats. The days of large, cumbersome and difficult to navigate websites are going to go the way of static HTML. Understanding who your major constituents are and tailoring the conversation toward each of their unique needs cannot be accomplished by simply breaking them into distinct silos. Users and members of your school community are going to fall into a variety of categories and will self select based on their primary role or connection to your school. A parent, may be an employee and alum all packaged into one user profile. What they want to know, access or whom they may want to connect with will change throughout the day. Shifting away from using email for extended conversations will give way to tools like Twitter or Yammer where community members can participate in the virtual dialogue based on their individual needs or desires. Our school is in the middle of organizing its second auction, and the co-chairs approached me with an idea to use YouTube to get their message out. We weren’t doing this in 2006 during our last auction.

Marketing and Communications Evolution - Steve Ritchie over at Proof Group recently blogged about the link between social media, marketing and communications. He had some kind words to say about our work on WA Mash but his larger point applies to all schools, public or private, universities and non-profits in general. We share the same basic premise that marketing and public relations should find a way to deliver consistently on your message, brand and demonstrate your ability to put your mission into action. Rethinking your communication strategy needs to go beyond electronic newsletters, web updates of sports scores and listing lunch menus. Providing your community with real, authentic and genuine opportunities to engage with one another should be a trend more and more schools move towards.

Mobile technology - Making information available and interconnecting it for mobile platforms is going to grow. If you haven’t picked up an iPhone recently you should. The App Store is the real deal and schools like Stanford and others are actively creating applications designed to run exclusively on mobile computing platforms. The Obama campaign was also a good example of this, they launched an iPhone app that kept supporters linked to media files, a full library of the candidate’s platform and information on local events. Schools should try to harness the increasing number of faculty, parents, students and young alums that are plugged into mobile computing devices for communicating everything from sports scores to snow days.

Facilitating relationships - Everything from the way we recruit new teachers, to how we market our schools to perspective families and parents, to engaging them with one another once they are a part of our schools will hinge on our ability to harness social media technologies. Beyond the traditional notion of community, connecting students and teachers to peers and colleagues around the world will continue to grow in the face of more educators embracing the power of social networking. I frequently have substantive and thought provoking conversations on Twitter with friends I have never met in person. My Facebook profile contains high school friends, WA alums, professional colleagues, co-workers and college buddies.

Resource consolidation - In the past few years, we have experimented with just about every technology and software tool out there. In fact, we have fostered a climate of experimentation and creative exploration. As Associate Head of School and former CIO, I have been fortunate to help shape the environment. Rather than insist on one blogging platform or one web based application over another, faculty have had the ability to explore, create, and decide for themselves. Invariably, the process of “organic change” has created a Darwinian effect in terms of those resources and applications that most folks are gravitating towards. Facebook is popular among our students as it is among our faculty. Close to 30 faculty with Facebook profiles, including a WA Employee Facebook Group. Twitter seems to have the lead over Plurk and Flickr is the photo sharing platform of choice. Vimeo and YouTube are still up for grabs, but Wordpress has taken a very solid footing as the content publishing platform for the majority of users at Worcester Academy. The point is, that getting the majority of your users on one social media platform over any other is critical if your school is going to harness even a portion of the power of social media and school administrators will need to lead by example. Furthermore, with the current economic conditions forcing major universities to cut back on spending and new initiatives, the need to find powerful and low cost technology solutions will give way for many schools to reconsider how they deploy their technology and web based priorities and strategies.

My wife and I stopped getting the daily paper about two years ago. The Sunday paper went away about six months later and while a few magazine subscriptions remain active, I for one will be opting out of renewing many of them as they begin to expire. It seems like many others out there, my insatiable appetite for news, information, buzz and written entertainment increasingly comes from online sources. It makes flipping through the magazine seem like a 20th century act. Not to mention that I am unable to actually sit down and enjoy reading through any of these publications until I have completed my ritual of riding it of those annoying and incessant 3×5 cards littered throughout their pages. Needless to say, I am coming to a point in my life where I would much rather sift through the New York Times on my iPod Touch or Blackberry, where the act of scanning through the headlines seems somehow, more immediate, more to the point.

Let’s face it, many traditional publications have been forced to fill the bulk of their pages with revenue generating advertisements. Walk by your nearest newsstand or book store and you can flip through any one of a number of popular magazines and the majority of the pages are highly stylized, highly glossy ads feeding the insatiable appetite that is consumer driven American society. I would rather purchase a subscription, or sit through a few ads online knowing full well that the information I am looking for or the topic I am interesting in exploring is only a few clicks away. Take into consideration the ability to subscribe to RSS feeds or sign up for email alerts, my own personal little digest of information, tailored for me by the publications I choose. I love it. Therefore, it is not surprising to see a venerable publication as the Christian Science Monitor yielding to this 21st century reality and being forced to dramatically cut back its printed publication circulation.

I know that many of you out there will argue that the act of reading will never fully go digital. Taking your iPhone or iPod Touch to read the New York Times on the beach? Highly unlikely. Cozying up to a Kindle and glass of wine in front of the fireplace. I don’t think so. But on a day to day basis, it just seems like my desire to remain informed, enlightened and otherwise culturally literate is going more and more digital. In fact, as you look to social media services such as Twitter and Facebook, like minded friends both real and virtual are able to do something the printed publications were never able to do. They share links to great content that I might find interesting and the interconnectedness that is the social web is able to broaden my exposure to great content and creative ideas in ways like never before.

So the next time you go by a newsstand, ask yourself if you really feel like dealing with the annoying 3×5 card stock inserts. If the answer to that question is yes, then at least do us a favor and be sure to toss them in your recycling bin before you sit down to read that magazine.

If you are anything like me, I am sure that you have days at work when you sit back and wonder “Why am I doing this?” or ponder thoughts like “I should be selling beach toys to tourists.” Lets face it, it happens to all of us from time to time. We allow our emotions, our ego, our feelings to get in the way of our work, and for most people and usually most of the time, this is never really an issue. You move on. You decide its not worth it, its just a job and that in the end, Friday will eventually come around and you can forget about everything that bugged you.

But for some of us, its a little different. I’m not saying that I don’t occasionally have moments when I think to myself, it would be a whole lot easier to do some other kind of work. I should be in sales, or go work for Apple doing something very cool and very innovative, but the reality is that for those us who work in education or with young people in any capacity it is a whole different ball game. You can’t just brush off a bad day so easily because bad days have a way of making their way into your class. You can’t just decide that you have a bad case of the Mondays and so you will put off that project you need to get done, because 19 students are going to walk in and hope and expect that you will find a way to inspire them, motivate them and challenge them.

Back in 1995 when I first decided to get into teaching a close family friend shared his experience with me and said that the four years he had spent teaching science were some of the most rewarding of his life, but that eventually, “real life” caught up with him and the desire to do more and achieve more drew him out of education. That never happened to me. I found that working with young people gave my day purpose and meaning. It provided a constant perspective and reality check. It kept my ego in line and pushed my own thinking. This have never been more aparent than these past 10 weeks when 19 juniors and seniors answered my question “what do you want to communicate, to whom, and how best do we communicate it?” They went beyond just answering those questions. They created a paradigm shift in my own teaching and in their own learning. They became true content creators, they took on active and authentic roles as writers, bloggers, photographers, video creators and most importantly, they inspired me and each other.

While the first phase of our little experiment that is WA Mash may be over, the reality is that this group of 19 young men and women from all walks of life, all backgrounds, interests and parts of the world have done something really special. They have left their mark on the world and on me. I am sad to see them go, many have asked if they can stay on as contributors and I would gladly have each of them remain connected to our work. And on Monday, when a group of eager, anxious and unkowing creative writing students enter my classroom, what they experience will have been shaped by not only me, but by this group of young creative thinkers. That is why I do this and sometimes, all you need is a little reminder.
